RELIEF PRINTS

The linocut is a printing technique. On a linoleum plate a design is made or copied from a sketch, after that not to be printed are cut out with special tools (gouges). Then the linoleum is inked up with a roller. A sheet of paper is carefully placed over the plate and the picture printed onto the paper with he help of a printing press. The print is the mirror image of the picture on the plate.

MOTIVE

drijfveerMemories are the inspiration for my work.
A painting by Vuillard (1896-1940) brought back memories of my childhood. He painted 'the dress' and in his work I recognized the atmosphere of my past: the sewing atelier.
As a child I always played with materials and patterns. This fascination still shows in pictures in which decorative elements are important. My visual language consists of patterns incorporated in figurative pictures. I am fond of traditional methods. The rituals of the printing studio are similar to the way I used to play. It is my objective to give a new impulse to the traditional wood - and linocuts by experiments. Once the printing process is finished I work the surface of the print by drawing, scraping or scratching. The resulting works of art have a special appearance, not always immediately recognizable as prints.

ALLIANZ LINO- AND WOODCUT AWARD

Every year insurance company Allianz offers an award to a number of graduates of Dutch Academies of Art.
They also publish a catalogue of 50.000 copies. This catalogue shows works of other artists as well. In this way they stimulate the contemporary art of lino and woodcut printing in the Netherlands.

ARTCETERA

8 artists
8 individuals together
8 times a different point of view united in the Artcetera Foundation

The Artcetera members encourage each other to work from the basis of their own expressive energy. They work individually but together they organize exhibitions or major projects.
The result is individual art of high quality, put to the test by the members of the group.

H O L T

Holt is an association of lino- and woodcut printers from the three Northern provinces of the Netherlands. The association was founded at the Academy of Arts in Groningen in 1998 by about 20 artists, most of whom were making woodcuts (holt = wood). Holt's objecive is to save and distribute the know-how of the traditional art of woodcutting.
Another objective is to encourage experiments to invigorate and renew the traditional methods of lino-and woodcutting. Every year the Holt members show their prints in an exhibition and choose a collective theme to make a special print.
